Best Worst Case

How do you do that thing you do?
The one that got me wrapped up into you.
Around your finger, hopelessly spun,
at least until you are finally done.

Why must I try to close my eyes
to what you have made so obviously plain?
Scrawl another name upon your list,
the faceless names that you will never miss.

I’m hoping for the best case
knowing it’s a mistake.
The worst will always find me.
A secret smile on your face,
knowing it’s the worst case.
Just another romantic would-be.

Why would I still persist
just to fight the tide of loneliness?
Especially when it’s so well-known,
one day we’ll all die and die alone.

How do you do that thing you do?
The one that got me wrapped up into you.
Around your finger, hopelessly spun,
like running headlong toward a loaded gun.

I’m hoping for the best case,
knowing it’s a mistake.
The worst will always find me.
A secret smile on your face,
knowing it’s the worst case.
Just another romantic would-be.
